Hello!
I am a health educator and our clinic is in the process of starting Parenting. We have a pretty successful Pregnancy program, however I still have questions about Parenting. 1. What activities do other Centering sites do to facilitate discussions outside of the self assessment sheet? The Facilitator's Guide doesn't cover much activities in Parenting as it did for Pregnancy, so it seems like we have the freedom to come up with our own activates to facilitate discussions. 2. Is it more beneficial to administer vaccines during or after our "circle up" time. It seems like vaccines will take up a good hour or so of our 2 hour window. So we want to make sure our babies receive their vaccines during those particular visits, but also want to have a productive discussion time with 5 crying and/or irritated babies 3. Is it possible to get the Bright Futures curriculum to supplement Centering post 1 year old? Our site plans on extending our program to 24 months and we would like to know what topics or information to cover after 1 year old. 4. How often do other sites see post 1 year old infants? 15, 18, 20, 24 months? Or something different?

We have just revised the CenteringParenting materials, based on great feedback from a number of our practice sites. You'll find the Facilitator's Guide is bursting with suggestions for new activities and conversation starters. The materials are aligned with the AAP Periodicity Schedule and Bright Futures guidelines for family centered well-child care through the 24 month visit, with flexibility for additional visits.

We started Centering Parenting in June of last year (Pregnancy 5 years ago) and we are still figuring out some of this stuff too. As far as activities, we don't really do a whole lot since moms and dads usually have a lot to talk about. Our vaccines are all done at the end of each session. We reserve the last 20 minutes for the medical assistant to come in and administer vaccines, that way we aren't trying to have more meaningful discussions with crying babies. Vaccines don't take that much time to administer. I am very interested in seeing the new materials as well, but we ordered enough existing materials for the projected volume of the grant over the next year and a half.

Thank you so much for your input. I really appreciate it. Especially knowing now that the vaccines don't take much time and can be done in 20 minutes towards the end. Hopefully the new parenting materials has more activates we can do with our babies to encourage families to support growth and development.

We have been doing CenteringParenting for about 6 years now. Our sessions are 2 hrs long. We leave vaccines for the last 30 mins of our sessions. We have various activities and people that come in to our groups depending on the age. As an example, we have a member of Choosy, ( www.choosykids.com/) come in to discuss healthy food options and recipes at the 6 mos visit. We have a car seat safety expert come in at the 2 week and 2 month visit. Depending on the dynamic of the group, parents often utilize any extra time talking amongst themselves and pose some great topics for discussion. I'm happy to discuss how we make Centering work at our high volume, mainly medicaid clinic.
