This group came up with some awesome strategies for successful facilitation. I added a few too . This wisdom from this CenteringParenting Basic Facilitation workshop can be used by facilitators in any setting. Thank you for your wisdom MN!
Aqui Para Ti & Partner Program Strategies for Strong Centering Group Facilitation:
1. Refer to the group consistently instead of answering questions as the "expert"
2. Don't get caught up in problem solving
3. Be friendly
4. Be energetic
5. Be flexible
6. Choose group openings that are appropriate for the age of the babies in your group
7. Ask questions that bring forward solutions
8. Thank your minority group for speaking up
9. Ask questions that help the group to define the topic for themselves in their own language and from their own understanding
10. Use the talking stick when someone is being dominant as a way to refocus the group
11. Schedule time to follow up instead of going one-on-one with a mom, guardian or couple in the group setting
12. Remember you don't have to address everything in group
13. Cultivate strategies to gently move the group along
14. Summarize topics, findings, myths and facts only as needed
15. Remember to work as a team
16. Respectfully redirect
17. Value all opinions
18. Use humor
19. Ask strategic questions
29. Acknowledge conflict and keep the larger conversation moving
21. Refer to the guidelines
22. Always leave room for different opinions, cultural knowledge and beliefs
23. Use a positive, loving closing
24. Normalize hardships; everyone struggles in some ways sometimes
25. Use activities that move our bodies as we do the learning
26. Ask participants what they know, think and have experienced; don't just give answers
27. Be willing to sit back and listen
28. Value your co-facilitator
29. Sit someplace in the circle where you can see you co-facilitator without turning your head
30. *Trust the group and trust yourself (this is core Centering knowledge)*
