Good Morning,
My name is Lorrie, I'm an RN and the Coordinator and Co-Facilitator for our CenteringPregnancy® Groups for our practice in Dayton Ohio. While collecting the data for our patients (Centering and Non-Centering), I have noticed a trend with some of our moms who have tested positive for Covid-19 during their pregnancy. I am just curious if anyone else has noticed any of these same findings with their patients. Regardless of when they have contracted Covid-19 (from the first trimester to the last few weeks of pregnancy), I am seeing a big upswing in "SEVERE" Pre-Eclampsia (before delivery but also after delivery) and I have noticed a small upswing in Pre-Term Births and and increase in our C-Section rates.
This is simply out of my own curiosity, I am not using this data for anything specific, it's just a trend that I've noticed and I was curious if anyone else has had similar outcomes.
We had previously re-started our "In-Person" Centering groups and have had great results. Our patients who were feeling isolated have commented on seeing the huge benefit of this type of group prenatal care. We have made a few changes in our practice, but have not had any significant issues.
1.) Cleaning and sterilizing everything in the room in between patients (chairs, yoga balls, yoga mats, clipboards, pens, etc.)
2.) We are using bottled water and pre-packing cute little "snack bags" with fresh fruit, granola bars, fruit & grain bars, yogurt, and string cheese.
3.) We no longer pass around items during discussions, I either hold up the materials, or place the items on the floor or some place visible to everyone.
4.) We have measured distances of six feet around the room and placed large Red X's out of Duct Tape on the floor, so our patients know exactly where to place chairs, yoga balls or yoga mats, and we have limited our groups to eight people maximum to obtain safe social distancing.
5.) Everyone is required to where a face mask "properly" regardless of vaccination status (with no complaints I might add).
We have not had any negative comments or complaints about any of these changes, and everyone has expressed gratitude to be able to receive their prenatal care in the group setting.
